Child Water Safety Week

May 25-31, 2013 is Child Water Safety Awareness Week.

Did you know that drowning is the second leading cause of accidental childhood death? The Florida Gulf Coast Center for Fishing and Interactive Museum is helping to raise awareness by placing creatively decorated lifeguard chairs in public and private settings.

Check out the lifeguard chair that Guy Harvey Outpost, a TradeWinds Beach Resort, created!

All chairs will first be on display at the Center, where visitors can also browse through the Art Gallery which depicts a history of fishing in the local community and features a variety of fine arts and crafts by local talent. The Guy Harvey Outpost Auditorium there hosts a variety of conservation and marine-oriented films.
“We have a tremendous fishing heritage. We want to teach children about life using fishing … it’s a universal draw for the kids and adults,” says Jim Simons, President of the Center for Fishing.

Participation in formal swim lessons can reduce the likelihood of childhood drowning by 88%! TradeWinds beach staff go through lifeguard training yearly.
